Eat, Love and Contemplate

For the 5th. year in a row, our beautiful island of Holbox puts on the apron and grabs its cutlery to live the three most delicious days of the year! This 2016 will be held the 5th. edition of the Gastronomic Festival "Eat, Love and Contemplate", which brings together the best of the island's cuisine, now famous in the map for its delicious flavors among their beautiful natural sceneries.

The beautiful beaches are the setting for a trendy fair of colors and flavors, where locals and visitors, friends and neighbors, national and foreign, meet together to enjoy, for three days, the most delicious and representative dishes of the island and the guest state, which this year is the Mexican state of Colima. November 10, 11 and 12 are the confirmed dates for the event.

The stage will be dressed up with the presence of famous Mexican artists, who will give the audience the best of their musical repertoire: some of them are Kalimba, Jorge "Coque" Muñiz and Alejandra Ávalos, among others.

If you visit the island during these days, it would be a great idea to get closer and get to know the culinary options that Holbox has. Come with us to eat, to love and to contemplate!

The luminescent beaches in Holbox

It's one of the most bewitching natural spectacles that can be seen on the beach! Although it occurs in other parts of the country and the world, Holbox is a privileged place and some dark nights, the sea water wears a bright turquoise halo, such as the lace veil of a beautiful bride.

This mantle occurs when thousands of micro-particles of bioluminescent plankton generate a radiant glow on the sand near it. These tiny organisms like fireflies emit their own light, creating flashes when disturbed due to the water movement of the waves breaking on the beach.

These flashes appear on the surface, painting it in blue, green and silver tones. The most spectacular is that this phenomenon is completely harmless and those who witness it can get into the water to enjoy this particular occasion, although being at night is not recommended.

Luminescence occurs in some marine creatures found at great depths. Works as camouflage for some species, others use it to pair with its agencies and other species it serves more to defend them and confuse predators. Luminescence is also found in jellyfish and some other species of fungi, bacteria, worms, insects and cephalopods.

Although not as frequent as we would like, the ideal place for this phenomenon season is between the months of July and January, when these marine microorganisms come to light the beaches of the beautiful island of Holbox. In our country luminescence can be observed in Holbox, Quintana Roo, and in some places of Campeche, Oaxaca and Nayarit.

What to do in Holbox

Holbox is a quiet island, away from the hustle and bustle of large cities. Here time seems to slow down, giving you a sense of tranquility and peace that you do not find in other tourist destinations. But there are plenty of activities you can do during your visit!

Of course, being a destination of sun and beach, you can enjoy long walks along the seashore at your own speed while enjoying the sand, the beach, sunbath and swim. The waters of Holbox are sheltered from the large Caribbean currents, as it is located in the Gulf of Mexico (that's why the color of the water is different from the rest of the Quintana Roo beaches and its shades go from the blue marine aqua, to the emerald green). The gentle currents can allow activities such as snorkeling and diving, as underwater landscapes are extraordinary. Another new activity is to SUP (stand-up paddle) in the calm waters and even yoga on surfboards to develop your control and balance.

There are some areas of slightly higher waters where you can do surfing, kite surfing, sailing, fishing, etc. And of course, the tours offshore to meet with the giant of the seas –the whale sharks–in season, which runs from May to September.

Holbox welcomes the Giants of the Seas

When speaking about Holbox in mid-May, it is inevitable to talk about one of our most dear visitors, whose season starts right now, in the middle of this month until mid September.

It is impressive to see how prompt is this big guy to arrive to Holbox each year. The Whale Shark, also known as domino fish, curiously is not a shark, as it does not belong to the family of sharks and is not whale as it is not a marine mammal, however, the appearance and size that characterize them are the reasons of their name.

Surely in these days the fishermen of Holbox have started to sightseeing this cute fish, the largest ocean. Although their impressive size, they feed mainly with plankton, which is composed by microorganisms that they can strain in a mouthful of water and get through a filter system located in their mouth and throat.

We invite you to visit us this season and live the great experience of swimming and snorkeling with these huge visitors, who swim free in the waters off the coast in the northern part of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

Our suggestions: please, take a shower before boarding the boat to take you to meet the whale sharks, rinse well off your skin all kinds of chemicals (cream, deodorant, makeup), do not use any sunscreen –it’s better to wear sunglasses and pareo–, and preferably do not touch them. It's for your safety and theirs!

HOLBOX, A PARADISE FOR BIRDWATCHERS

The beautiful island of Holbox is home to hundreds of species of birds that inhabit the island and surrounding areas, as well as other migratory birds which in their long trips, spend some time enjoying the splendid areas of jungle, mangrove and lagoons in Holbox. There are some companies that organize tours to precisely enjoy the natural spectacle offered by these wonderful winged and colorful creatures.

In season, the pink flamingos come to nest and have their young in the whole area of the northern of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, from Holbox to Rio Lagartos and Celestun, offering amazing scenes with the sky painted in pink. Flamingoes obtain this color due to the small crustaceans which they feed, who inhabit in low-lying lagoon areas. You can also see seagulls, herons, frigates, cormorants and many other species on the banks of mangroves and natural gardens surrounding the islands.

Experts in the study of birds have visited for years these lands to attest and document the habits of these awestruck flying species, which are undoubtedly one of the great attractions of our wonderful island of Holbox.

Gastronomy in paradise
In Holbox you’ll delight your palate!

One of the most attractive areas for the tourists visiting our beautiful island of Holbox is precisely the lunchtime. Of course, being a fishermen’s island, seafood is the most popular and the most abundant: you can eat fresh seafood delicacies almost directly from the water: fish, shrimp, lobster, all fresh and of the highest quality, prepared your taste in many places and in all categories: beach restaurants, the ones at any street, or in your hotel’s restaurant.

Throughout the island there are many small restaurants hosted by local families that offer extremely delicious pies! There are made of corn dough and stuffed with fish, dogfish, shrimp, stingray and lobster which are, indeed, a delicacy.

Beyond the sea food, Holbox has developed a varied and high quality cuisine, you can find food from different countries, from prime ribs, Argentina grill, Italian specialties, and vegetarian food, even very fine patisseries with delicious breads and pastries. Let's go to lunch at Holbox!
